Any disease that affects the respiratory system impairs the lung functions and leads to complaints such as wheezing, snoring, coughing, phlegm, blood in the mouth from coughing, chest and side pain, back and shoulder pain, weight loss, exhaustion, loss of appetite, sweating during the night, and fever.  Many examinations and observations related to lung diseases are performed in this unit and many technological facilities are being utilised for this goal.

There is an advanced respiratory physiology laboratory in Near East University Hospital Department of Thoracic Diseases.  Procedures include spirometry tests, reversibility test, current volume curve, diffusion capacity, lung volumes, exercise test and maximum oxygen consumption, bronchial provocation test, and artery blood gas measurements.  Skin allergy tests are performed extensively.

In our Bronchoscopy unit, endoscopic inspection of the respiratory tract can be performed primarily for lung cancer using rigid bronchoscopy, fibreoptic bronchoscopy (with video bronchoscopy) via devices which enable endoscopic examination of the respiratory tract.  Biopsy from lung masses and enlarged lung lymph glands is possible with the US device and lung diseases such as tuberculosis, lymphoma, sarcoidosis and lung cancer can be diagnosed.

Respiratory disorders while sleeping can cause cardiovascular (hypertension, arrhythmia, heart deficiency, sudden death) and cerebrovascular (stroke) diseases.  Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common (95%) among these diseases.  Snoring, stopping breathing while asleep, being tired during the day, headaches in the morning, attention deficit, and waking up tired are the most common symptoms.  Many diseases are diagnosed and treated in the sleep laboratories, primarily snoring.

Non-invasive mechanic ventilation can also be provided for patients in intensive care and those staying overnight.  Radiologic imaging is being used efficiently by following the latest technological developments closely.
